In 1830 the Virgin Mary appeared three times to St. Catherine who was twenty-four years old. Saint Catherine put her hands on the Virgin Mary's lap as the Our Lady spoke to her in an empty chapel.
Saint Catherine's stories spread throughout France and the entire world as many thousands of Catholics began wearing medallion's called 'The Miraculous Medal' commemorating her visions.
She was buried on December 31,1876. In 1933 her body was exhumed for an official beatification. During an examination of the body, it was found that her body is in perfect state of preservation. At 140 Rue du Bac, Paris, the mummy is currently encased in glass beneath the side altar. The praying hands you see in the picture are not real. Saint Catherine's hands were severed and stored separately, in respect for the lap they rested on.
