Nefertari was known as one of the most beautiful and influential female rulers of her time. She was married to Egypt's most powerful and renowned Pharaohs, Ramesses II. Ramesses ruled from 1290 to 1224 BC. As she was in such a high status, upon her death she was laid to rest in one of the mostly ornately decorated tombs of Egyptian Queens in the Valley of Queens. Unfortunately, over the years, a great deal of the decor on her tomb has been stolen by thieves.

Scientist used various techniques such as radiocarbon dating and genetic testing to determine Nefertari's identity. When her tomb was first dicovered by scientists in the Valley of Queens, only fragments of mummy legs were found. It was not until years after the discovery were the legs further analyzed and determined to be belonging to Nefertari herself. A great deal of research determined that although she lived to the age of 50, Nefertari spent the final years of her life suffering greatly. Her leg fragments showed since of severe arthritis.
