BiographyEdit

Irtieru is an Egyptian mummy of unknown place of origin, currently located at the National University of Archaeology in Lisbon, Portugal. Irtieru is notable for being the first Egyptian mummy to be found with a kidney.

MummificationEdit

Irtieru is still enclosed in cartonnage of a reasonably high quality, possibly identifying him as a member of an elite family.

StudiesEdit

Studies have been conducted on Irtieru, due to his kidney remaining intact. THe findings have been published in the International Journal of Paleopathology due to the unique condition in which his kidney was found, as detailed in the pathology section.

PathologyEdit

Due to the way his liver was preserved, it is very likely that Irtieru had renal tuberculosis, and may in fact be the earliest recorded case of that disease found. His kidney was preserved due to its calcification as a late-stage symptom of his disease.
