Hanshan Deqing entered a monastic school in Nanjing’s Bao’en temple when he was twelve years old. While he was at the school he studied literature, and religion. He began writing poetry at 17.

Two years later he became a Chan monk under the Buddhist name Cheng Yin. In 1571 he set out as a wanderer, he went from monastery to monastery, and after four years he settled on Mount Wutai.

By 1583 he became a famous Buddhist Master and set out wandering to remote areas. During this time he changed his name to Hanshan Peak for anonymity. In 1623 he traveled to Caoxi, where after his death, his body was mummified and enshrined.
